YEAR 6 · END OF KEY STAGE 2

Ready for the next chapter.
One skill at a time.

A parent-friendly guide to SATs, with practical preparation ideas and the questions to ask about Year 6 tuition.

WHAT ARE SATs?

A picture of learning
at the end of primary.

Key Stage 2 national curriculum tests, often called SATs, take place in Year 6. They cover English reading, grammar, punctuation and spelling, and mathematics. Writing is assessed by teachers.

The club advertises 1:1 SATs preparation and Year 6 SATs group sessions. Ask Liz how the available support could fit your child’s learning priorities.

SATs and the 11+ are different

SATs assess primary curriculum learning. The 11+ is associated with selective secondary admissions. Preparing for one does not register your child for the other.

A MANAGEABLE APPROACH

Find the gap.
Practise the skill.
Notice the progress.

  1. Start with the difficulty. Is the challenge the concept, the wording, remembering a method or working independently?
  2. Revisit understanding. A worked example, a drawing or a spoken explanation may help more than another full paper.
  3. Practise a few focused questions. Keep the task small enough to discuss what happened.
  4. Return to it later. Try a different example to see whether the learning has transferred.
  5. Use practice papers thoughtfully. They can help with format, but should not replace learning the underlying skills.

Questions for a Year 6
tuition conversation.

About the learning

  • What has school identified as the next step?
  • Which subject feels least comfortable?
  • Can my child explain a method independently?
  • How can practice fit with school homework?

About the sessions

  • Are Year 6 groups currently running?
  • Would individual support be a better fit?
  • What is the session length and cost?
  • How will we discuss what to practise next?

Ask school for the assessment arrangements that apply to your child, including any access arrangements. Use the official guidance for the correct academic year.
